MUN Project Reflection-
The Model United Nations is a stimulation of the United Nations to observe our world in specific areas and to learn about being a citizen of the world where we face many issues. The United Nations is the organization providing a future for humanity. The United Nations provides care and unity for each nation internationally. The UN handles things like famine, climate change, the refugee crisis. It consists of 193 different countries which all belong to the general assembly (the organ of the UN where all member states have equal representation); and the Permanent 5 who carry the most power. The P5 are China, France, The United States, Russia, and The United Kingdom. The P5 are the most powerful because they have to agree with resolutions/ amendments introduced by the rest of the general assembly for them to be passed. Playing the role of The Delegate of The Islamic Republic of Pakistan taught me about what it’s like to live in a low-income country with a low economy and dangerous corruption. Issues like climate change and the current refugee crisis effect these undeveloped countries far more than developed countries. The conferences we had for those issues really provided the evidence and reason why these issues aren’t solved already and where the controversy of them is derived from. The Model United Nations was a learning experience important for all of our individual citizenships, our understanding of the world we will live in, and how to take action throughout our lives.
Throughout the MUN Project, we discovered the current issues we live in, how to take action as we become adults, and how to be more involved citizens. I am proudest of the poise and confidence I kept while speaking in the conferences. I used to really struggle with having the confidence to speak in front of people, and I have grown in that area so much since my earlier years. Keeping calm and staying professional was a must for the MUN conferences, especially during the climate change issue that we exhibited. Learning about the UN and how it works is important for each person because it furthers their knowledge of the modern world and current events. Understanding human rights and how we use them on a legal level is very important as it strengthens our citizenship and prepares us for being adults in a sporadic world. MUN was not appealing at first but ended up being a very interesting thing to indulge in as a teenager.
Model United Nations has changed my perception of the world and controversial issues like climate change. Climate change impacts specific places more than others and will eventually kill us all. However, learning about reintroduced something my Grand-Dad taught me before he passed. “Live each day as if it were your last.” Is what he told me and what I was reminded of when studying and discussing climate change. Being someone who hates politics and political discussion, this did not seem ideal at first. Although, engaging in diplomacy was a good way to have these controversial discussions. Learning how international relations work will help us with our personal relationships and relations we may have as adults as international relations and MUN involves patience and evidence gathering skills. As I walk away from this project I will take enduring understandings with me such as citizenship, human rights knowledge, human rights practice, patience, research skills, and most importantly an understanding of the lives we live internationally and why equality is a necessity.
